Return of the Ancients is the first PoE2 update in a while that made my group actually log in early, not just read patch notes over coffee. Patch 0.5 adds Runes of Aldur, a cleaned-up Atlas, new Ascendancies, and a planner that finally lives inside the game. You still need gear, maps, luck, and a bit of PoE2 Currency sense before you start chasing every shiny system at once.

Runes, Remnants, and Why Maps Feel Busier
Ezomyte Remnants are the league hook, and they're pretty easy to read once you stop treating them like random graveyard clutter. You pick a reward, nearby corpses get back up, and the rune symbols decide what kind of nonsense they bring with them. Later zones get more rune slots, so the "quick click" turns into a proper little recipe puzzle.
Verisium is where the crafting side gets spicy. Runeforging can add Runic Ward, reshape armour defences, improve older Unique items, or even make low-level Uniques hit like they belong in the current patch. Runic Ward matters because it catches you after Life drops to 1. Not forever. Just long enough to flask, dodge, or mutter something rude at your monitor.

What Players Are Actually Copying
The Meta: Breach crafting and Spirit Walker pet setups everywhere.
The Snag: Fresh builds melt when Delirium stacks too high.
The Fix: Secure waystones first, then specialise hard.
Let's be real here: most bricked characters didn't need better tech, they needed fewer half-finished Atlas ideas.

Atlas Choices That Matter Early
The new Atlas feels less like wandering into fog and more like picking a lane. Ritual sits in a known western cluster, Breach has its own direction, and league storylines now point toward weaker pinnacle versions before the real thing. That's a big deal for normal players who don't no-life the first weekend.

SystemWhy It MattersEarly Risk
Runes of AldurStrong crafting and flexible skillsMessy fights from bad rune picks
BreachGenesis Tree gear targetingNeeds damage before bosses
RitualUniques and Omens show up moreTribute can bait greedy choices
DeliriumGreat scaling laterToo tanky for weak starters

That table is not a tier list, by the way. It's more like pub advice: pick what your build can finish without needing three portals and a prayer.

The Sacrosanctum Question Keeps Coming Up
A lot of players are asking if Sacrosanctum is secretly busted now because its Recoup value changed in patch 0.4.
It's stronger than old listings suggest. Use the 10-20 percent Life Recoup roll, not the outdated 5-10 percent trade data.

Build Planner Is Useful, Not Magic
The in-game Build Planner is a nice win for patch 0.5, especially for people who hate alt-tabbing through five tabs and one outdated spreadsheet. Drop the `.build` file into Documents/My Games/Path of Exile 2/BuildPlanner, load it from the skills tab, and the passive tree gives you a clear trail. Still, don't treat it like full damage math. It won't solve breakpoints, market prices, or your bad habit of buying upgrades too late, even if a quick PoE2 Currency buy search makes planning your next item feel less chaotic before the next mapping session.
